  • Garth, who became the GSB's ninth Dean in 2009, has spent most of his adult life at Stanford.
  • He came to the GSB in 1978 from his native South Africa to pursue a PhD in Economics, Business, and Public Policy.
  • He then spent eight years in Cambridge, MA; 7 at MIT and then a year in Michael Porter's competitive strategy group at HBS before returning to Stanford in 1990.
  • At Stanford he has been engaged in a variety of activities: he built a strategic management group, co-led the Stanford Computer Industry Project, was an Associate Dean under Dean Michael Spence, founded the Center for Electronic Commerce and Business, and was a co-director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.
  • He is an industrial organization economist who applies the insights of that field to strategic management. Much of his work has focused on the implications of network effects for competitive strategy.
  • A two-time winner of the distinguished teaching award, Garth loves to teach and has taught courses including strategic leadership, critical analytical thinking, formation of new ventures, and women's perspectives on entrepreneurship.
  • An avid photographer, Garth gets his exercise cycling in the beautiful foothills around Stanford (or spinning in the early morning hours).
